When a site like twitter goes down, backup plans aren’t available. Being out of the loop in the IT world means you become a dinosaur that much quicker. And when it’s used as an only means of communication for real data, it’s validity comes into question.

A real news company uses 2 independent sources to verify a story before running with it. It seems that with twitter and online news sources just run with a rumor.
